Segmenting spend wallets from long-hold cold storage
28 January 2026
Executors stumble when a single list says “crypto” beside five venues with no purpose tags. Spend wallets move; cold storage should not look identical on paper.
Labels that survive a non-trader reading them
Use household language: “Mum’s weekly spend on Exchange A,” “Dad’s hardware device — long hold,” “Joint watch-only for tax paperwork.” Avoid ticker-heavy nicknames that only one sibling understands.
Why segmentation comes before fancy formatting
Pretty binders do not help if categories are wrong. Account Segmentation Mapping exists for families who already listed venues but never separated purpose. Once segments exist, the Inheritance Record Pack writes cleaner first-48-hours notes: check spend venues for pending withdrawals, then attend to cold storage with whoever holds the device.
Hong Kong timing note
Exchange account emails tied to old employers or school addresses still appear in local households. Segmentation sessions often spend as much time updating recovery email ownership as they do on wallet labels. Bring those email questions to intake; they belong in the record.
